Advancing Health Equity by Addressing Structural Stigma in Harm Reduction and STBBI Prevention in New Brunswick

ResearchNB is pleased to announce the recipient of the Public Health Research Fund call focused on addressing structural stigma in harm reduction and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection (STBBI) prevention. This project will support research aimed at understanding and reducing systemic barriers that affect access to harm reduction and healthcare services for people who use substances and those affected by STBBIs. Findings will contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen harm reduction and STBBI prevention initiatives in New Brunswick through evidence-informed policy and practice.

A total of one (1) project was funded, representing an investment of $79,500. Congratulations to Cait Vihvelin from UNB Saint John.

This project examines the systemic, structural, and institutional factors that contribute to stigma related to substance use and STBBIs in New Brunswick. Using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach, people with lived and living experience will actively shape the research process, ensuring findings reflect realities of system access. Conducted in partnership with Avenue B Harm Reduction, this project integrates policy review, qualitative interviews, and multi-stakeholder engagement to identify mechanisms for reducing stigma across systems and informing more inclusive policies that promote dignity, safety, and health equity.

We would like to thank all the researchers who applied for this funding opportunity.

ResearchNB is proud to offer a range of funding programs available throughout the year. We look forward to working with New Brunswick’s gifted, innovative, and resourceful research community to help our province grow and thrive.
