Mais pour Sophie L\u00e9ger Auffrey, professeure agr\u00e9g\u00e9e \u00e0 l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de Moncton, les math\u00e9matiques sont bien plus que \u00e7a : elles sont un outil essentiel pour r\u00e9soudre des probl\u00e8mes concrets &#8211; qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agisse de comprendre comment un pneu r\u00e9agit \u00e0 une chauss\u00e9e glac\u00e9e ou comment les changements climatiques menacent la population de crabes des neiges dans les Maritimes.\t<\/h2>\n\t\u00ab\u202fJ&rsquo;ai toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 int\u00e9ress\u00e9e par les math\u00e9matiques appliqu\u00e9es,\u202f\u00bb dit-elle. \u00ab\u202fM\u00eame pendant mes \u00e9tudes de premier cycle, je me suis tourn\u00e9e vers des projets qui reliaient les maths au monde r\u00e9el &#8211; comme un projet qui explorait le lien entre les math\u00e9matiques et la musique.\u202f\u00bb\n<h3 data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1051\">Mod\u00e9liser pour mieux comprendre<\/h3>\nSophie a d&rsquo;abord concentr\u00e9 ses recherches sur la simulation de pneus, en collaboration avec des partenaires industriels. L&rsquo;objectif : am\u00e9liorer les m\u00e9thodes num\u00e9riques utilis\u00e9es en ing\u00e9nierie pour mod\u00e9liser la performance d&rsquo;un pneu sur diff\u00e9rents types de surfaces.\n\u00ab\u202fLe but, c&rsquo;est de simuler un pneu en mouvement qui peut faire face \u00e0 toutes sortes de d\u00e9fis concrets\u202f\u00bb, explique-t-elle. \u00ab\u202fDe la boue, de la neige, un trottoir, un nid-de-poule&#8230; on veut que le pneu soit capable de r\u00e9sister \u00e0 toutes ces conditions.\u202f\u00bb\nCette volont\u00e9 de mod\u00e9liser des syst\u00e8mes complexes pour mieux les comprendre l&rsquo;a men\u00e9e vers un tout autre terrain de recherche &#8211; cette fois, dans l&rsquo;univers marin.\n<h3 data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1778\">Un enjeu local qui touche tout le monde<\/h3>\n\u00ab\u202fLe projet sur le crabe des neiges m&rsquo;a vraiment interpell\u00e9e parce que c&rsquo;est un enjeu local,\u202f\u00bb dit Sophie. \u00ab\u202fC&rsquo;est encore des math\u00e9matiques appliqu\u00e9es, mais utilis\u00e9es pour comprendre un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne bien r\u00e9el, qui touche notre r\u00e9gion.\u202f\u00bb\nLe crabe des neiges est une esp\u00e8ce tr\u00e8s sensible aux variations de temp\u00e9rature. Il pr\u00e9f\u00e8re les eaux froides, et m\u00eame un l\u00e9ger r\u00e9chauffement peut nuire \u00e0 sa survie. \u00c0 mesure que les oc\u00e9ans se r\u00e9chauffent, son habitat naturel se r\u00e9duit &#8211; une menace s\u00e9rieuse pour sa population et pour l&rsquo;industrie de la p\u00eache.\n\u00ab\u202fSi la population n&rsquo;est pas en sant\u00e9, il n&rsquo;y en aura pas assez \u00e0 p\u00eacher,\u202f\u00bb souligne-t-elle. \u00ab\u202fOn veut comprendre quel est l&rsquo;\u00e9tat actuel de la population, et \u00e0 quoi on peut s&rsquo;attendre dans les prochaines ann\u00e9es avec les changements climatiques.\u202f\u00bb\n<h3 data-start=\"2572\" data-end=\"2613\">Pr\u00e9voir l&rsquo;avenir avec les bons outils<\/h3>\nEn ce moment, les quotas de p\u00eache sont d\u00e9termin\u00e9s par le minist\u00e8re des P\u00eaches et des Oc\u00e9ans \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide de mod\u00e8les qu&rsquo;ils utilisent depuis plusieurs ann\u00e9es. Mais Sophie et son \u00e9quipe travaillent sur un mod\u00e8le plus global, plus int\u00e9gr\u00e9 &#8211; un mod\u00e8le math\u00e9matique qui tient compte de plusieurs caract\u00e9ristiques biologiques et environnementales du crabe.\n\u00ab\u202fOn veut repr\u00e9senter math\u00e9matiquement les caract\u00e9ristiques cl\u00e9s du crabe des neiges pour pouvoir pr\u00e9dire ce qui va se passer \u00e0 court et \u00e0 long terme,\u202f\u00bb explique-t-elle.\nPar exemple, l&rsquo;incubation des \u0153ufs prend normalement deux ans. Mais si l&rsquo;eau est trop chaude, cette p\u00e9riode peut diminuer \u00e0 un an, ce qui a des impacts majeurs sur le cycle de reproduction. \u00ab\u202fOn est capable d&rsquo;ajuster nos \u00e9quations pour int\u00e9grer ces changements et analyser leurs effets sur la population. Est-ce que \u00e7a va l&rsquo;augmenter? Est-ce que \u00e7a va nuire? Qu&rsquo;est-ce que \u00e7a change?\u202f\u00bb\n<h3 data-start=\"3521\" data-end=\"3560\">Une approche fond\u00e9e sur les donn\u00e9es<\/h3>\nDerni\u00e8rement, des chercheurs ont observ\u00e9 une chute importante dans une cat\u00e9gorie de crabe &#8211; un signal d&rsquo;alarme. \u00ab\u202fIl y a quelques ann\u00e9es, la population allait tr\u00e8s bien. Mais l\u00e0, on voit une diminution drastique. Est-ce \u00e0 cause des changements climatiques? C&rsquo;est ce qu&rsquo;on essaie de mieux comprendre avec nos mod\u00e8les.\u202f\u00bb\nGr\u00e2ce aux donn\u00e9es r\u00e9elles fournies par le minist\u00e8re, l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe de Sophie peut comparer ses pr\u00e9visions aux tendances observ\u00e9es sur le terrain. \u00ab\u202f\u00c7a nous permet de voir si on est sur la bonne voie, si nos mod\u00e8les reproduisent bien les comportements essentiels de la population.\u202f\u00bb\n<h3 data-start=\"4160\" data-end=\"4216\">Un travail interdisciplinaire pour un impact durable<\/h3>\nComprendre la population du crabe des neiges, ce n&rsquo;est pas juste une question de maths &#8211; c&rsquo;est un d\u00e9fi interdisciplinaire qui fait appel \u00e0 la biologie, aux statistiques et aux math\u00e9matiques.\n\u00ab\u202fOn ne peut pas contr\u00f4ler les changements climatiques \u00e0 nous seuls,\u202f\u00bb dit-elle. \u00ab\u202fMais on peut contribuer \u00e0 prendre de meilleures d\u00e9cisions pour s&rsquo;y adapter.\u202f\u00bb\nPar son travail, <strong data-start=\"4589\" data-end=\"4613\">Sophie L\u00e9ger Auffrey<\/strong> d\u00e9montre que les math\u00e9matiques appliqu\u00e9es ont un r\u00f4le fondamental \u00e0 jouer dans notre soci\u00e9t\u00e9.
