Pour lutter contre l&rsquo;\u00e9rosion c\u00f4ti\u00e8re, les ing\u00e9nieurs utilisent des capteurs afin d&rsquo;\u00e9valuer l&rsquo;impact des mar\u00e9es sur le littoral. Et pour extraire des min\u00e9raux essentiels, les entreprises comptent sur des capteurs pour identifier le meilleur emplacement o\u00f9 commencer l&rsquo;exploitation mini\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Avec autant de d\u00e9cisions qui d\u00e9pendent d\u00e9sormais de la pr\u00e9cision des capteurs, il devient crucial pour les Canadiens d&rsquo;avoir acc\u00e8s aux technologies de capteurs les plus r\u00e9centes. Ce sont des \u00ab capteurs absolus \u00bb qui fonctionnent de mani\u00e8re ind\u00e9pendante et conservent leur pr\u00e9cision au fil du temps.<\/p>\n<p>Le secret de cette fiabilit\u00e9 remarquable ? Des temp\u00e9ratures extr\u00eamement basses et la physique quantique.<\/p>\n<p>Les capteurs du Dr Barrett se comportent de mani\u00e8re plus pr\u00e9visible que les autres appareils, car la substance qui en constitue le c\u0153ur, le rubidium, est refroidie \u00e0 moins 273 degr\u00e9s Celsius ou moins.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 cette temp\u00e9rature extr\u00eame, deux ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes se produisent : les atomes deviennent tr\u00e8s immobiles, et il est possible de les manipuler comme des ondes plut\u00f4t que comme des particules individuelles. Le froid rend la nature quantique des atomes &#8211; leurs propri\u00e9t\u00e9s ondulatoires &#8211; plus facile \u00e0 d\u00e9tecter et \u00e0 contr\u00f4ler que dans des conditions plus chaudes.<\/p>\n<p>Par cons\u00e9quent, un capteur quantique fournit des mesures pr\u00e9cises en tout temps. Il peut \u00e9galement fonctionner dans des endroits inaccessibles aux signaux satellites, comme sous terre ou sous l&rsquo;eau, et il n&rsquo;est pas sensible aux faux signaux ou aux interf\u00e9rences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Une nouvelle industrie potentielle pour le Nouveau-Brunswick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le Dr Barrett aimerait que l&rsquo;industrie s&#8217;empare de la nouvelle technologie issue de son laboratoire afin que le Nouveau-Brunswick puisse \u00e9tablir une industrie tourn\u00e9e vers l&rsquo;avenir autour de la d\u00e9tection quantique. Selon lui, les capacit\u00e9s en mati\u00e8re de d\u00e9tection quantique seront essentielles tant pour l&rsquo;innovation que pour la souverainet\u00e9 canadiennes, en particulier dans des domaines tels que la d\u00e9fense, l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie, les ressources naturelles et l&rsquo;a\u00e9rospatiale.<\/p>\n<p>C&rsquo;est pourquoi le Dr Barrett consid\u00e8re qu&rsquo;il fait partie de son r\u00f4le de chercheur de contribuer \u00e0 former la main-d&rsquo;\u0153uvre de l&rsquo;avenir quantique du Nouveau-Brunswick. Les \u00e9tudiants de son \u00e9quipe acqui\u00e8rent des comp\u00e9tences sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es qui deviennent de plus en plus pr\u00e9cieuses pour leur carri\u00e8re et pour la province.<\/p>\n<p>Il d\u00e9clare : \u00ab Les technologies quantiques ne sont pas pr\u00e8s de dispara\u00eetre, tout comme l&rsquo;intelligence artificielle.
