Biogas from the anaerobic digestion of agricultural and other organic materials is technology that has been around for more than 30 years. This technology is tried, tested and true. Research has been carried out around the world which has optimized anaerobic digester outputs (like biogas) and decreased startup costs and risks.
For the past three years the NB government has commissioned ResearchNB to study province-wide biomass volumes, then researching the biogas opportunity for New Brunswick, to now funding an Anaerobic Digestion Concierge Program housed at ResearchNB in 2024.
Natural resources like agriculture, forestry, seafood and other organic materials are abundant in New Brunswick and we are good stewards of the land. The best stewards of all may be our farmers. Nearly every farm is built on a waterway and a water table that feeds livestock and the family. Every farm’s soil is used to grow food that the livestock and the family consumes. Farmers care. A lot. But they’re struggling with the rising costs of production and the negative impacts of climate change.
Caring for the environment and giving living things what they need in order to reach peak performance is every farmer’s goal. They do this often through what’s called Best Management Practices. These BMP’s are carefully designed and constantly tested by agrologists and farmers with support from various fields of expertise.
The average NB farmer is a college, university, or postgraduate degree holder. They are integrating research into their daily practices and they work for meaningful connections between themselves and those who are conducting research because that’s how important breakthroughs will have a direct impact on NB farms.
The Anaerobic Digester Concierge Program is a collaboration between Research NB, Environment and Local Government, and the Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Fisheries. The program is meant to provide meaningful, reliable, and fact-based support to farmers and their ecosystems of service providers and suppliers, if they wish to navigate biogas opportunities available to them.
Danielle Connell officially became RNB’s Business Development Manager – Biogas in September of this year and she has been part of the core team that conducted the research, reporting to government, and then co-creating this new program to help our agriculture industry over the last three years. Danielle’s objective is to help facilitate and create new revenue streams for farmers that help us reach Net Zero.
